Testimonial:
When Kathy and Dudley first became interested in becoming homeowners, they knew they faced several barriers. With Dudley working part time, Kathy receiving her disability income and having past credit issues, they knew they would have to work hard to be successful. Once the credit issues were resolved, they were amazed when a letter was received from USDA Rural Development stating they had been approved for a mortgage.
Dudley admits there were times thru the long, frustrating process, that he would have backed out. However, Kathy kept pushing forward because "they had always wanted to be homeowners since they were old enough to be out on their own". Both admit that some of the legal "stuff" was somewhat intimidating and because they were not able to "hire" an attorney, they really needed to put their trust in the agencies they were working with. Legal Aid is not available in their rural area. With the support of family, friends and the involved agencies, it all worked out.
Kathy and Dudley believe their success is due in large part to the assistance received from Lewis County Opportunities, Housing Assistance Program, and the $35,000 CDBG grant they received from Snow Belt Housing Co., Inc. With the help of CDBG grant money, they were able to buy a more expensive home needing minimal repairs, and still had the bulk of their grant $ to be used for the down payment and closing costs.
Kathy and Dudley always followed thru with their obligations of becoming a homeowner. Even with transportation barriers, they were still able to take the required homeownership counseling course, which was only available in a bordering county approximately 40 miles away.
In their closing interview Kathy beamed as she stated, "we're not even paying out as much as we were when we were renters". They would like everyone to know, that even with some barriers, and limited income, if you are willing to work hard and follow thru, you too can be a homeowner.
